None of us want to get older and we certainly don’t want the signs of aging to come any sooner than they are supposed too!

As soon as anyone mentions the words “anti aging” we immediately think of creams or facials, but what about food? What we eat can play a vital part in keeping us looking and feeling younger, whilst keeping our bodies in great condition.

There are a number of anti aging foods that can work against the signs of aging on our bodies.

Sunflower Seed Butter

An almost completely fat free alternative to peanut butter and full of polyunsaturated fatty acids which will actually help to reduce cholesterol.

Sunflower seed butter tastes great on some whole grain toast, which can also prevent cholesterol building up in your body.

Berries in general are a fantastic anti aging food because they are packed full of antioxidants; in particular, “Anthocyanins”.  These antioxidants, known for their health benefits are found in blackberries, strawberries, blueberries and many other fruits.

Blueberries in particular are one of the best berries to eat as an anti aging food because they have a higher concentration of antioxidants.  A simple rule to follow is the darker the berry, the better it is for you.

Wild Salmon

You either love it or hate it, but wild salmon is packed full of essential fish oils including omega 3s and it’s well known that eating fish at least once a week can help keep your heart healthy.  Keeping your heart healthy  helps to protect against cardiovascular diseases.

Pistachios are a great little snack to take into work for when you are feeling a little bit peckish, or find yourself being drawn to the biscuit tin.  Pistachios may be small but are an anti aging super food, as they are packed full of nutrients including B vitamins and are also a good source of fibre. Many people don't get enough fibre in their diet, so eating these tasty morsels will help give your body the fibre it needs.

There seems to be an ongoing debate about whether or not coffee is good for you and it does get a lot of bad press. The reason it gets such a bad press it due to the fact that people drink it with either a lot of sugar, milk or chocolate sprinkles etc.

If coffee is taken black, with nothing in it,  studies have shown that coffee can help protect against heart disease in later life.

Eating a bowl of porridge made with water instead of milk is a great way to give your body a dose of fibre.  Eating oats can also help reduce cholesterol, weight and the risk of certain types of cancer. The beauty of eating oats is that you can add other anti ageing foods to it, such as cinnamon which is a great antioxidant, or even raisins.

Red Wine

Yes you are reading this correctly.  Red wine is full of something called Resveratrol which is thought to prevent cell death in the heart and the brain.  There is of course one flaw with drinking red wine in that it contains alcohol which is of course a poison.  So it’s not the best one on this list to help fend off the signs of aging, but the resveratrol content might make you feel better about indulging in the odd glass!.

It gave ‘Popeye’ all the strength he needed and there may be some fact behind this.  Spinach is a fantastic anti aging food packed full of Lutein among other very healthy antioxidants.  Spinach is incredible easy to add to many different dishes or is great when added to a salad.  Eating a well balanced diet that contains lots of fruit along with vegetables that specifically contain Lutein may also decrease your risk of cardiovascular disease and give you healthier blood vessels.

Dark Chocolate

Rejoice!  Something on this list that not only tastes lovely but also, if included in a well balanced diet, can help reduce the signs of aging.  It has to be dark chocolate and eating one ounce a day can be enough to help lower cholesterol which increases blood circulation in the skin, this in turn helps it to  retain moisture, which can reduce facial wrinkles appearing. The darker the chocolate the better, and don’t be lead into believing that white, or dairy milk have the same effect.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a great anti aging food that contain Lycopene.  Some studies have shown that it can help to protect your skin from being damaged by the sun’s harmful rays (UV).  Sweet potatoes are also full of vitamin C which is great for the skin.  Sweet potatoes not only protect your skin but also contain ingredients that help the body's natural collagen production, so they help keep your skin looking great, and are pretty tasty too!

So that’s it! Our top 10 list of anti aging foods that when used alongside a daily skin care routine, can help you reduce the signs of aging quite dramatically. Of course all of the above anti aging foods should be part of a well balanced diet and moderation is key.
